How Often Should You Get a Facial? A Seattle Esthetician’s Honest Answer
If you have ever wondered how often you really need a facial, you are not alone.
The internet loves a simple answer. Every four weeks! Once a season! Whenever Mercury is in retrograde!
But after nearly 30 years as an esthetician, I can tell you the honest answer is: it depends on your skin, your goals, and what is happening in your life right now.
Some clients benefit from weekly appointments for a short period. Others do beautifully coming in every two to four weeks. And if it has been six months since your last facial, do not worry. We are not going to scold you. We will simply meet your skin where it is and start from there.
Is Once a Month the Ideal Facial Schedule?
For many people, a facial every four weeks is an excellent maintenance schedule.
Monthly appointments give us regular opportunities to remove buildup, address congestion, support hydration, and adjust your treatment as your skin changes. Seattle weather, travel, stress, hormones, product changes, and yes, life in general can all affect how your skin behaves from one month to the next.
That does not mean every person must have a facial exactly every 28 or 30 days. Skin does not own a calendar. Your ideal schedule depends on what we are trying to accomplish.
How Often Should You Get a Facial for Clogged Pores or Breakouts?
If your skin is congested, breakout-prone, or in need of a serious reset, I may recommend coming in once a week for the first month. After we begin getting things under control, we can often move to every two weeks and then into a regular maintenance schedule.
Why more frequently at first? One facial can make a noticeable difference, but it cannot always undo months or years of buildup in a single visit. Trying to force every clogged pore out at once can leave the skin unnecessarily irritated.
Steady progress is usually kinder to your skin and gives us a better long-term result.
At DERMASPACE, the iDerm Deep Ionization Facial is often my recommended starting point for congested or problem skin. It combines cleansing, exfoliation, a moisture pack with yucca and infrared heat, careful extractions, and our signature ionization process to help clean, heal, and maintain healthier-looking skin.
How Often Should You Get a Facial for General Maintenance?
If your skin is relatively stable and your goal is to keep it healthy, clear, and balanced, every two to four weeks is a great rhythm.
Think of it like regular maintenance. You do not wait until your teeth hurt to see the dentist, and you do not have to wait until your pores are waving a tiny white flag before booking a facial.
Regular appointments also help us catch small changes early. Maybe your skin is suddenly drier. Maybe a new product is causing congestion. Maybe you need more exfoliation in one season and less in another. When we see your skin consistently, we can make thoughtful adjustments instead of starting over every time.
What If It Has Been More Than Six Weeks?
Once you go beyond six weeks, I tend to think of the next appointment as more of a reset than routine maintenance.
That is not a bad thing. It simply means there may be more buildup, dehydration, or congestion to address. Depending on your skin, we may need more than one visit to get you back where you want to be.
And please do not put off booking because you think your skin is “too bad.” We have seen it all. Truly. Helping you get back on track is the job, not a reason for judgment.
How Often Should You Get a Facial Before a Wedding or Special Event?
If you are preparing for a wedding or another important event, earlier is always better.
Ideally, begin several months ahead so we have time to learn how your skin responds and create a consistent plan. Depending on your needs, that may mean appointments every two to four weeks.
Avoid scheduling an unfamiliar treatment or aggressive exfoliation immediately before the big day. Your final facial should focus on treatments we already know your skin handles well, with enough time for any temporary redness to settle.
The goal is calm, healthy, glowing skin. No last-minute experiments required.
Can You Get Facials Too Often?
Yes, especially if every appointment involves strong exfoliation or intensive treatment.
More is not automatically better. Skin needs time to recover, and an overly aggressive schedule can lead to irritation, sensitivity, or a compromised barrier.
This is why the type of facial matters just as much as the frequency. A gentle, hydrating treatment may be appropriate more often than a chemical peel, microneedling treatment, or other advanced service. We will always consider your skin, recent treatments, home-care routine, and goals before recommending a schedule.
Do At-Home Products Replace Professional Facials?
Good home care and professional treatments work best as a team.
What you do every morning and evening has a huge impact on your results. A facial cannot make up for using products that are wrong for your skin, skipping sunscreen, or attacking every bump in the mirror.
At the same time, professional treatments can provide deeper cleansing, safe extractions, targeted exfoliation, and expert guidance that your bathroom routine cannot fully duplicate.
You do not need a shelf full of products. You need the right products, used consistently, plus a treatment schedule that makes sense for your skin.
My Honest Recommendation
If you are trying to correct ongoing congestion or breakouts, we may begin with weekly or biweekly treatments for a short period.
If your goal is general skin health and maintenance, every two to four weeks is usually ideal.
If it has been longer than six weeks, book a reset and we will take it from there.
And if you are unsure, that is completely fine. You do not have to diagnose your own skin before making an appointment. Book the facial that feels closest to what you need, and we can adjust the plan together when you arrive.
For clients who know they want consistent monthly care, the DERMASPACE Collective includes one iDerm facial each month, plus 10% off additional services and retail. It is a simple way to keep your facial routine from becoming one more thing you mean to schedule “soon.”
Healthy skin is not about chasing perfection. It is about consistency, realistic expectations, and giving your skin what it needs now.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is getting a facial once a month enough?
For many people, yes. A monthly facial is an excellent schedule for maintaining healthy, balanced skin. Clients working on active congestion or breakouts may benefit from more frequent appointments for a limited time.
How often should a beginner get a facial?
Start with one professional facial and let your esthetician evaluate how your skin responds. From there, a personalized schedule may range from weekly during a corrective phase to every two to four weeks for maintenance.
How long should I wait between facials?
The right interval depends on the treatment. Gentle maintenance facials may be scheduled every two to four weeks, while peels, microneedling, and other advanced treatments require their own timing and recovery periods.
Is it okay to get a facial only a few times a year?
Absolutely. Occasional facials can still be beneficial. Just remember that an appointment after a long break may function more like a reset, and multiple treatments may be needed if you want to correct significant congestion or other ongoing concerns.
What is the best facial for a first-time DERMASPACE client?
The iDerm Deep Ionization Facial is a great starting point for many new clients, especially those dealing with clogged pores, congestion, or problem skin. We can confirm the best treatment for you after reviewing your skin, goals, and any contraindications.
